Chapter Ten

The color drained out of Bower’s face as he took in the meaning of Adam’s words. Whether the agent was complicit in the knowledge of these hostiles in the city or not, it no longer mattered. The thought of rappelling down the elevator shaft or thrown to the hostiles had an impact on the otherwise cool exterior of our Company man.

It was at that moment I realized why Bower hadn’t shown that much concern in his imminent death… he had an alternative way out of here. It was a revelation I guess but it added up and why he appeared so unconcerned.

And Bower didn’t strike me as the hero type.

I turned my mic off and Ginger did the same when he saw me do so. With Bower’s helmet off, no one would hear him.

Without hesitation I turned to the agent. “All right, Bower we don’t have much time. I suggest you tell us now how you intend to get out of here or so help me I’ll have Adams throw you through the stairwell door right now.”

“I have no idea what you’re—”

Ginger Adams grabbed the agent by the lapels of his air Force cammies and started pulling him toward the stairwell doors. Ginger was a good 6’ 4” and a solid 260 pounds and while the agent topped out at 6’ 2” he weighed less than 180 I estimated. Bower had put his weapon down when he ransacked the safe and he didn’t appear to carry a pistol either.

“Don’t drag him, just pick the bastard up and throw him through the goddamned door.”

That did the trick. Bower no longer thought we were bullshitting as Ginger started to pick him up.

“All right, all right,” he said, his voice anxious, afraid.

The eyes of the others in the room went from watching the door to this little dance with the agent man and then back again. Even in this do or die situation, each had a grin on their face.

“There’s a rope in the circuit room on the roof, it reaches the ground. I was going to make my way out and rappel to the ground,” he admitted, but I had no way of knowing if it was the truth.

“What? You complained that the drop to the roof was too high, so the chopper pilot came in closer, now you’re telling me you’re going to rappel over four hundred feet?”

“I lied, I have many years’ experience. That’s why I accompanied you and not Attenport, he has very little field ops experience.”

“And how many ropes is there?” I no longer cared for excuses, I only wanted to get my men out of here in one piece.

“Just the one… it was only intended for me to use.”

From the corner of my eye, I saw Adams clench his fist and send a swift uppercut into the mid-section of the Langley spook. Bower doubled over as the air in his lungs escaped with a “whoosh.”

“You be a good boy now, agent man and show me where this rope is and maybe I won’t throw you off the roof.
